Writing Social Media Copies with GPT for Sheets

Written by Eileen Rosner | 6/16/23 3:34 PM

Let’s dive into the exciting realm of crafting compelling social media copies using GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) for Sheets. With the power of artificial intelligence at your fingertips and this simple-to-follow guide, you'll learn how to create engaging and attention-grabbing content that resonates with your audience.

Whether you're a seasoned marketer or just starting out, this introduction will equip you with the knowledge and tools to elevate your social media game. Best part yet, the AI get’s the bulky part of the work out of the way so that you can unleash your creativity and add some real added value to your copies!

First things first: enabling GPT for sheets

Installing GPT for sheets is pretty straightforward, and we have developed a 9-step guide to help you get going. A couple of things you must take into account are that you will need to set up an OpenAI account and add credit and that you will need to download the extension.

Go to Extensions  >  GPT for Sheets and Docs  >  Enable GPT Functions

While not every marketer utilizes Social Media Calendar templates, we highly recommend incorporating them into your workflow. These templates offer numerous benefits, including streamlining your content creation process, maintaining a consistent level of quality across all your content, and enhancing information organization for easy client collaboration and feedback. How to use GPT for social media copies

To initiate the function, simply enter "=GPT" into a cell and open parentheses. Following that, you have two options: manually input the content within double quotes as a text string for the prompt, or specify a cell location to retrieve the prompt.

For example:

=GPT(“Create a Twitter caption of no more than 200 characters”)
=GPT(“Create a variant of the following social media title”)

You can start with a general prompt like "Create a catchy social media copy for our new product launch" or "Craft an engaging caption for our latest blog post." You can even use different formulas, such as GPT_list, for the AI to generate alternatives based on your input prompt.

Is it necessary to fill in temperature and tokens parameters?

You don’t need to worry about the other parameters in the formula. If you don’t give any contrary instructions and simply leave them blank, the AI will use the default values stored in the script.

  • Max Tokens: The default number for max tokens is 100. One token is equivalent to around 4 characters. The important thing to remember is that the prompt and result copy must not exceed the model’s maximum content length, which is around 1500 words.

  • Temperature: with values ranging from 0 to 1, this parameter allows you to adjust the confidence level of the model when giving results. Closer to 0 means the model becomes more conservative and will yield more precise and predictable results. On the other hand, raising the temperature will instruct the model to try more daring and varied results.

  • Model: the default model works just fine to create compelling social copies, but if you want to look into other models to try out the tool, you can find more about each one here

Creating Compelling Social Media Copies

As with any sheet, you need to input formulas for the tool to give you your expected results. The best way to organize your sheet, we believe, is to add a column to the left side of the sheet labeled “Prompts”.

In this column, you will be able to input prompts for each social media post, clarifying any relevant information, such as the goal of the post. The great news is that it doesn’t need to be well written! The magic of Chat GPT allows you to feed the tool information, and the AI will create an engaging copy for you.

To assign a specific copy to a cell, such as the Facebook copy for your first post, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the desired cell where the copy should be, corresponding to the specific social media network (e.g., Facebook or Instagram).

  2. Enter the following formula in the cell:
=GPT_Edit(PROMPT_CELL, "turn into a catchy and grammatically correct NETWORK copy")

In this formula, replace 'PROMPT_CELL' with the cell reference that contains the prompt you want to use for the copy. Additionally, replace 'NETWORK' with the relevant social media platform, such as Facebook or Instagram.

  3. Feel free to modify the instruction "turn into a catchy and grammatically correct" to better suit the specific copies you are creating. Tailor it to meet your desired style and tone.

Following these steps and customizing the formula to your needs, you can conveniently generate captivating and grammatically accurate copies for social media platforms using GPT.

Edit Copies as Needed

While with the above steps, you will get drafts for all of your copies, be sure to review them, editing them to ensure that the tone matches that of the client you are working for and that all information is correct and focused on the goal of the post.

You can use different formulas to adjust the tone of voice of your social media copy. For example:  =GPT(CONCATENATE(“Write a”, A2, “post about”, B2, “ in a”, E2, “tone of voice”)).

  • Review and refine: Evaluate the generated copies and select the ones that align best with your brand and communication goals. Revise and refine the copies to ensure they resonate with your client’s target audience.

  • Human touch: While GPT can provide valuable suggestions, remember to infuse your copies with creativity and a human touch. Review the generated copies to add a personal touch, correct any errors, and make them more impactful.

Don’t Get Cocky with AI

While AI confidently mimics human language patterns, it lacks the ability to fact-check. So, while AI-generated content is a remarkable tool, it's crucial to exercise caution and ensure the accuracy of information independently. Embrace the benefits of AI-generated content while keeping a keen eye for verification and authenticity:

  • Independently fact-check any statistic or fact generated by an AI to ensure it is true.
  • Re-read each copy out loud to identify phrases that don’t make sense, are misleading, or even inappropriate.
  • Make sure to add additional copy or details by hand to ensure that the final copy serves its intended purpose.
